Storms are building to the south and east of Birmingham at this hour. They will move NNE, affecting eastern Shelby, eastern Jefferson and much of St. Clair counties over the next hour or so.

They are growing quickly from east of Chelsea to Columbiana then to east of Thorsby.

Parts of St. Clair County had already received some heavy rainfall, with upwards of two inches having fallen in some isolated sports along US-231 coming out of northeastern Shelby county and along US-431 north of Pell City. The NWS has issued an areal flood advisory for St. Clair County in light of the earlier rainfall and the expected heavy rain from these cells.

In addition, a strong storm has developed in the past few minutes near Bessemer in western Jefferson County. This will affect western parts of the county over the next hour as it moves north northeast. Another storm was springing up near Liberty Park along I-459. It will affect the Roebuck an Roebuck Plaza areas.

A few storms were forming over West Alabama in Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Lamar and Fayette Counties.

A huge mass of rain and storms was moving northward across South Central Alabama at a pretty good clip. It was approaching the Montgomery area. This activity should continue to encounter fairly unstable air as it continues its northward journey and should hold together to bring a decent soaking to many areas later this afternoon and evening.

Today’s storms are efficient rainmakers with high precipitable water amounts in the atmosphere. While significant severe weather is not anticipated, a few warnings are possible.
