Alabama Weather Update – 10:40 a.m.
Here is a look at the Alabama weather situation this morning…
Areas east of I-65 got it yesterday morning…western sections this morning.
Showers and thunderstorms continue across West Central Alabama from Jefferson and Shelby Counties on the east through much of northern Tuscaloosa, Fayette, Walker and Winston and then into Lamar and Marion Counties.
To the east, the line is faintly visible in weak radar echoes back to near Opelika.
The heaviest storm was just east of Jasper. Other heavy ones are between Hamilton and Double Springs and from Calera up to Hoover in Shelby County.
Visibility was down to 2 1/2 miles in heavy rain at Tuscaloosa just awhile ago, now it is down to 1 3/4 miles in a thunderstorm.
Skies are mostly cloudy and temperatures and in the 70s at this hour across the area.
There are a few breaks in the clouds to the northeast and southwest of the rain area that is oriented from northwest to southeast.
The West central Alabama activity is associated with a little tongue of colder air aloft and a little surface trough. There is also a cold pocket over East Alabama near Auburn and Phenix City. This could be a source of additional development.
The upper low is clearly evident in upper air analysis an satellite imagery just to the north of
Jackson MS. I think that the low will begin to lift out later today to the north and start to weaken. But there is a good chance of showers and storms through the rest of the day today and tomorrow across Central Alabama.
In fact, even as the low departs, it will leave a warm, moist airmass in place across the state and showers and storms will be a daily part of our forecast through most of the week. We might get a bit of a reprieve Saturday if a front can make it through here Friday night.
