Ridging Pattern Sets Up

After a tremendously active Friday, it looks like the overall weather pattern is going to settle down today and remain that way for much of the upcoming week. This will occur thanks to a rather large ridge setting up across the Central US. But we will also be watching events in the Southwest Atlantic as a weak, early season surface low could develop into our first storm of the season – but no strong predictions on that just yet.
The trough that brought us the unsettled weather yesterday has moved east and will eventually get cutoff from the westerly flow. It is this upper low that may help to reinforce and develop a surface low in the Southwest Atlantic as it meanders southward into the Southwest Atlantic. That feature remains nearly stationary for several days before weakening and eventually moving off to the northeast.
In the meantime, the ridge holds across the eastern half of the country while a deep trough develops over the West Coast. This means dry weather for the weekend and probably Monday but showers could begin to occur in the afternoon heat Tuesday and through the rest of the week. It looks like the showers will be mostly summer-like and probably remain pretty isolated, so most of us will remain dry.
Temperatures will remain pretty warm for the foreseeable future with highs dancing around the 90-degree mark for much of the upcoming week.
SPC has outlooked an area in the Carolinas today and tonight for a slight risk of severe weather while much of the Dakotas is also under the gun. For Day 2, Sunday through Monday morning, a large area stretching from the Texas Panhandle to Northwest Wisconsin will see the potential for severe weather.
Looking out into week 2 or voodoo country, the pattern flattens somewhat around June 1 and 2 with the westerlies well north. But that flattened pattern does not persist long with another fairly strong trough over the Eastern US by June 6th.

Headed back to Central Alabama after a lovely week on the Northwest Florida coast. Weather has been wonderful, the Gulf water smooth and refreshing, and no oil or tar balls to deal with. I hope that you have a great Saturday and Godspeed.
