COLD MORNING: Some spots have dropped into the 30s this morning; Haleyville reports 38 degrees at 5:00, with Gadsden at 39. Our Skywatcher in the community of Broomtown, in North Cherokee County, just checked in and reported 37 degrees. And, a late report from Vic Bell in Northeast Etowah County: “36 with frost on roof and cars”. Most places are in the 40 to 43 degree range with a clear sky. Today will be delightful with a sunny sky, low humidity, and a high around 70 degrees. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high close to 80.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: It still looks like the most concentrated zone of rain and storms will be a little west and north of here. Places like Shreveport, Jackson, Little Rock, and Memphis will have the dual threat of severe thunderstorms, and heavy rain throughout the weekend, but a warm ridge over Florida will nose into Alabama, keeping the really organized nasty weather just to the west.

Friday at this point looks mostly dry, with warm and breezy conditions and just the chance of a shower or storm in a few spots late in the day. For the weekend, we will continue to mention some chance of showers and storms, but they are most likely over the northwest part of Alabama, for places like Muscle Shoals, Russellville, Haleyville, and Hamilton. For Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston, Gadsden, we figure a pretty decent part of the weekend will be dry, with just a few scattered showers and storms. And, south of I-20 and east of I-65, showers should be hard to find as you get under the ridge. Highs will be in the 80s with a gusty south breeze.

NEXT WEEK: The band of rain and storms finally shifts down into Alabama early next week, and we will forecast a good chance of showers and storms on Monday and Tuesday. We could see some pretty healthy rain amounts on these two days with a slow moving surface boundary. Then, drier air takes over Wednesday, and the latter half of the week looks dry.
