THIS AFTERNOON: Another summer-like day for Alabama. Birmingham was at 85 degrees at 2:00; the state’s warm spot was Eufaula, with 87. Mobile is the coolest city with 78 degrees, thanks to the cooler water in Mobile Bay. The big story is the “pollen storm” giving the sky a yellow-green tint. Those that deal with allergies are really suffering.

REST OF THE WEEK: We stay dry tomorrow, with a partly sunny sky and a high around 80. Then, rain returns Thursday, which will help to temporarily wash away the pollen, and herald a sharp change to cooler weather. Not much in the overall thinking… seems like the main window for showers and storms will be from about 2:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Thursday, with very little chance of severe weather since the band of showers will come through during the morning, when the air tends to be rather stable. SPC does hold on to a slight risk of severe storms late tomorrow night, after midnight, for the northwest corner of the state, but the thunderstorms should be weakening at that point.

Rain totals will be around 1/2 inch, with isolated amounts to 3/4 inch. And, all of the rain should be east of Alabama by late afternoon Thursday. The high Thursday will be only in the mid to upper 60s.

Once again, for growers (both professional and amateur), while most spots will see a low somewhere between 38 and 41 early Friday and Saturday morning, but the colder valleys and protected areas will be in the low to mid 30s with potential for frost. It shouldn’t be especially damaging, but just be aware the possibility is there.

NICE WEEKEND: The weekend does indeed look delightful, with sunny mild days and clear cool nights. Highs will be in the mid 70s with low humidity values.

NEXT WEEK: We stay dry Monday and Tuesday, and the GFS runs recently have suggested a big storm out west will be shunted well to the north of Alabama, and we could very stay dry all week long. You might not realize it, but we have a 2.52″ rain deficit for Birmingham for the year, and that number will only grow next week as the dry weather continues.

VOODOO LAND: Still no sign of any serious severe weather threat for Alabama for the next 15 days as a mean upper ridge holds across the Southeast U.S. Overall, temperatures will remain above average, with rain below average.
