Stormy Evening
An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.
RIGHT NOW: Thunderstorms continue to increase over Northeast Mississippi, and these will enter Northwest Alabama shortly. Hardly any surface based instability, but very cold air aloft and excellent dynamic lift will mean these storms could produce hail, and possibly high winds in a few spots. We still can’t rule out an isolated tornado somewhere, but the threat overall seems small at this point. SPC maintains a severe thunderstorm watch until 7:00 p.m. CDT for Northwest Alabama… see the Weather Xtreme video for more.
The main threat of strong storms will be from now until 8:00 p.m. Once the sun does down, the storms should weaken as what little surface based instability we have fades away. All of the rain should be out of the state by 11:00 p.m.
TOMORROW: The exact time that clearing happens is still a great mystery after passing short waves like this one; we will play it optimistic, and forecast morning clouds followed by a partly sunny afternoon and a high around 60. However, it would not completely surprise me if clouds stick around all day and we don’t get past the mid 50s.
THE WEEKEND: Saturday still looks like a great day with a good supply of sunshine and a high around 70. But, rain returns quickly on Sunday with periods of rain and possibly a thunderstorm. For now the overall threat of severe weather Sunday looks low, and rain amounts of about 1/2 inch are likely. The rain will move out of Alabama by Sunday night.
NEXT WEEK: Monday will feature a clearing sky, along with a high in the low 60s. Then, Tuesday will be sunny and pleasant with a high in the low 70s. The 12Z GFS has introduced an upper low in the northern Gulf at mid-week, which pushes rain up into the southern half of Alabama on Wednesday, but for now we will leave our forecast dry. Thursday and Friday look warm and dry with a high not too far from the 80 degree mark.
THE LAND OF VOODOO: The 12Z GFS continues the idea of a significant cold snap around April 9-11… see the Weather Xtreme video for details. Still no sign of any really serious, widespread severe weather threat for the next two weeks.
