Rain Returns To Alabama

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

WARMEST DAY SO FAR IN 2010: Birmingham was at 60 degrees at 2:00 this afternoon, our warmest temperature so far this year, and the warmest since December 22. Tuscaloosa was up in the mid 60s at 64, and ice continues to melt away from the ponds across Alabama as the Deep South is indeed finally out of the deep freeze for now.

WEEKEND RAIN: Not much change in our thinking on our weekend rain event. Periods of rain are likely tomorrow through tomorrow night and early Sunday morning. The rain should begin during the midday hours tomorrow, with rain becoming widespread by afternoon. The NAM is printing 1.36″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is a little drier with 0.91″. Seems a safe bet that most folks around here will see one inch, with some spots getting more. No real surface based instability, so probably no thunder. Just a good ole fashioned rain.

While the rain should end early in the day Sunday, the clouds will linger through much of the day. We do note the NAM holds the rain longer over Alabama Sunday, but we will side the the faster GFS for now. The high Sunday will be around 50 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: Dry and pleasant weather is likely Monday and Tuesday with a good supply of sunshine. The next rain event will unfold Wednesday night into Thursday. Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the GFS is a little faster, ending the rain early Thursday morning. Confidence in the timing will improve as we get closer to the event.

VOODOO COUNTRY: The 12Z GFS now shows a pretty good shot of Arctic air invading much of the nation right at the end of the month following a healthy round of rain and storms. The idea of a cold snap about that time looks good, but of course we can’t be specific this far in advance.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.
