A Cold Rain

| December 30, 2009 @ 6:33 pm | 34 Replies

Rain covers a good bit of Alabama tonight. Heavy rain is over South Central Alabama, west of Montgomery. Moderate rain extends from Chilton, Coosa and Tallapoosa Counties northeastward through East Central Alabama.

Some areas reported sleet this afternoon at the onset of the precipitation.

Temperatures are in the lower 40s rather uniformly across this part of the state. Readings will remain steady or rise a couple of degrees during the night.

The rain will diminish later this evening and most of it should be gone by tomorrow morning.

Colder air will start to flow into Alabama late tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night. Most of the moisture will be gone by then, but there could be a few snow flurries late New Year’s Eve into Friday morning.

The models have backed off a bit on the intense cold for next week, but we are still expecting a protracted period of very cold weather, with highs in the 30s and lower 40s, and lows in the teens and 20s.

We should stay dry through much of next week. The GFS has consistently portrayed a strong storm system for next weekend. The track of the low will determine what kind of precipitation we see in Alabama.
