Have you ever seen a sun dog?

You probably have, and didn’t know what it was.

A sun dog, or parahelion, is a bright spot of colored light on either side of the sun, at the same height above the horizon as the sun. They are caused by ice crystals in high altitude cirrus clouds.

We will have plenty of cirrus clouds spreading across the area from the west today. They will be coming from a trough over the western U.S., spilling across the ridge into Alabama.

The best time to see them will be when the sun is lowering the sky this afternoon.
