RAIN IS GONE: We get a chance to dry out after a big time soaking yesterday. Rain totals across Alabama yesterday included 6.05” at Demopolis, 5.54” at Moody, 5.11” at Inverness, 5.00” at Homewood, 4.75” at Weaver, 4.75” at Odenville, 4.61” at Clanton, 4.41” at Moundville, 4.35” at Concord/Hueytown, 4.30” at Clay, 4.27” at Greystone Farms, 3.97” at Scrougeout (Northeast Etowah County), 3.96” at Gardendale, 3.51” at Coker, 1.69” at Jasper, and 1.24” at Millport.
TODAY: We will forecast a clearing sky today; much of West Alabama will enjoy a bright sunny day, but the clouds over the eastern counties will hang tough for a while. Some communities around U.S. 431 could see the clouds all day, with a chilly north breeze continuing around the back side of the system formerly known as Ida, which is now near Tallahassee, Florida. No rain for the Veterans Day parade today in downtown Birmingham, and we believe the sun should be out by then.
TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Fantastic weather for all of the state with sunny mild afternoons and clear cool nights. The high tomorrow will be in the mid 60s; we will be close to 70 Friday, with low to mid 70s over the weekend. No rain at all for high school and college football.
NEXT WEEK: No doubt there will be some risk of rain early next week, but timing remains problematic. Some model runs have brought in a chance of showers as early as Sunday night; the latest run of the GFS shows showers mainly Monday night into Tuesday morning. For now will mention a chance of showers Monday and fine tune the forecast as we get closer. If the air can become unstable, there also could be some thunderstorms involved. Drier air returns by the middle of next week.
VOODOO LAND: The GFS continues to advertise a sharp, long wave upper trough over the eastern U.S. in the November 23-25 time frame which would suggest a rain/storm event, followed by a sharp change to colder weather. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
STORM ALERT XTREME IS SATURDAY: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday November 14 at the BJCC during the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years). We encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend this every year; you simply cannot get enough training. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just show up, but get there early for a good seat. We had a packed house last year.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.
Look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 this afternoon… enjoy the day!
