Somewhat Unsettled

A rather wet and cool day for early September across Central Alabama yesterday. Rainfall amounts varied significantly, and the heavier rain prompted a flash flood warning for the area just northwest of Montgomery. Very low rainfall amount at Cheaha yesterday but almost three-quarters of an inch at my house in Helena.
Looks like the weather will remain somewhat unsettled again today, though it seems we are starting the day out with somewhat less shower coverage looking at the current radar. The pattern has not changed much as the Southeast remains under a broad, weak trough that is helping to bring moisture aloft to the area from the western Gulf. That coupled with low level moisture primarily from the Atlantic with the steady easterly flow should be enough for additional showers today. Once again it will be hard to time them as weak disturbances move through the upper flow.
As the upper troughiness gets weaker Monday, I think we’ll still see showers but somewhat fewer. Tuesday could be our driest day this week as showers during the afternoon become the rule for much of the work week. By next weekend, the upper trough will establish itself again as a strong short wave drops out of Canada and strengthens the trough over the eastern US. This trough could be another relatively sharp trough, so it is highly possible we will see some cooler weather in about a week – but that does verge into voodoo country.
Temperatures will remain fairly steady with lows in the 60s and highs in the 80s. Variation will depend on how many clouds and whether or not you get under a cooling shower.
No organized severe weather is expected across the US, and the tropics have become somewhat quiet, too. The only area being watched is just northwest of the Cape Verde Islands. It is moving northwest to north and into an area where the upper level shear does not favor much development.
Looking further ahead into voodoo country, we could see some drying as the upper ridge to our west noses into the Southeast. At the end of the period around the 20th and 21st, the GFS is suggesting a rather sharp trough over New England or just off the Atlantic Coast which could bring some rather chilly weather to our northeastern cousins.
