EASTERLY FLOW: We will continue the chance of a few scattered showers today and tomorrow as a moist easterly flow sets up across Alabama. Rain should be mostly light and spotty; the NAM is printing 0.38″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is drier with 0.11″. The sky will be cloudy at times, and temperatures will remain below average for early September. Parts of East Alabama could fail to reach 80, with low to mid 80s elsewhere.

THURSDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: While an isolated shower could pop up somewhere during this four day stretch, the weather looks generally dry with comfortable temperatures. Partly sunny days, highs in the low to mid 80s, and lows in the low to mid 60s. Rain should not be a problem for high school football games Thursday and Friday night, and the college games in the state on Saturday. A nice calm pattern for early September.

TROPICS: The wave east of the Leeward Islands sure looks like a tropical storm from here; we figure the guys at NHC will upgrade the system this morning. Steering currents have collapsed out there, so it won’t be in a hurry to go anywhere. Expect a slow northwest motion, passing north of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Sure seems this will be another system that will recurve before reaching the East Coast of the U.S., but that is not carved in stone.

Hurricane Jimena in the East Pacific is packing sustained winds of 155 mph, almost at category five status. It should be a category three storm at the time of landfall along the southwest coast of the Baja peninsula tomorrow morning. Then, it will slow down as it weakens, and excessive rain is likely for the northern Baja region, with potential for more than 20 inches of rain. Some of that moisture could move into Arizona this weekend; watch the Weather Xtreme video for details.

High level moisture from Jimena is streaming over Mexico and into the northern Gulf of Mexico; no sign of any organization with the disturbed weather over the Gulf.
