Spot Checking Thunderstorms

As of 6:20 this evening, this is where some of the strongest and most worrisome thunderstorms are located in North and Central Alabama. This is not a full list, of course, just the stronger storms where there is a lot of lightning and a danger to football games.

* Guntersville in NE Alabama. The National Weather Service in Huntsville issued a Significant Weather Alert for that cluster of thunderstorms. Not only dangerous lightning and heavy rain, but strong wind gusts to around 40 are possible. A smaller storm south of there was forming over the west edge of Etowah.

* West Jefferson and East Tuscaloosa Counties. The thunderstorms were right along the Jefferson/Tuscaloosa line. NWS in Birmingham issued a Flood Advisory for Tuscaloosa County including Tuscaloosa, Northport and Holt. This is based on scattered thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain that we expect to move westward across Tuscaloosa County and produce rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches. This is in addition to previous rain the produced around 2 inches late this afternoon. The additional rain could cause re-flooding of small streams and poor drainage areas. Already the Tuscaloosa Skycam in downtown Tuscaloosa has measured 1.24 inches from an earlier storm.

* South Chilton County and North Autauga County. A west to east cluster of storms right along the county line was dumping very heavy rain and dangerous lightning. The storms were moving almost due west.

* South of Montgomery. Numerous showers and storms extend from near Montgomery SW to almost Monroeville and SE to near Dothan. Exremely heavy rain was indicated across Crenshaw and Butler Counties including the Laverne area.

Remember, these storms seem to be overdosed on lightning and the danger to football stadiums is well known.
