The good news is that drier air has filtered into Central Alabama as the upper trough exits the East Coast. But the bad news is that the upper ridge seems to be taking the upper hand meaning some hot day ahead.

Enjoy today as temperatures climb into the mid 80s after a cool, cloudy and damp Saturday with humidity levels considerably down from the last few days. But the lower humidity will be short-lived as moisture makes a fairly quick come back.

However, with a ridge just to the west and the westerlies along the northern tier of the US, there is no sign of any major weather system to bring us any organized rain events. So with low level moisture we will begin to see the possibility of isolated showers and storms on a daily basis beginning about Wednesday and continuing into the end of the week. A weak front coming into the Tennessee River Valley on Friday could bring slightly enhanced shower chances then as it gradually dissipates as the ridge builds stronger across the Southeast US.

The GFS still suggests a tropical system off the northeast coast of Cuba around Friday and Saturday, but that is verging on voodoo country, so I’m not ready to make any kind of call on that just yet. And the upper ridge is the main feature for the Southeast US throughout the voodoo time frame. And if the GFS is right, the ridge could be quite strong with the potential for some serious heat. But we’ll see on that.

Don’t forget to listen to our weekly netcast anytime on the web or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

I ended up staying longer than originally planned at Cheaha State Park. My wife and I are working as volunteers up here with the new superintendent, Hartley Frederick, and his assistant, Brian Casey. We put a fresh coat of paint on the sign for the Doug Ghee Boardwalk to Bald Rock Wednesday and Thursday. Today we tackled updating several more signs around the Park. It is such a good feeling to give back to Park that we love to visit and enjoy so much. And with the economic times as they are, the State Park staff can use whatever help they can get handling the awesome job of keeping one of Alabama’s finest gems in tip top shape.

I expect to post the next Weather Xtreme Video by 8 am tomorrow morning. Godspeed.
