Anyone remember Sly and the Family Stone?
“End of the spring and here she comes back
Hi Hi Hi Hi there
Them summer days, those summer days
That’s when I had most of my fun, back
high high high high there
Them summer days, those summer days
I “cloud nine” when I want to
Out of school, yeah
County fair in the country sun
And everything, it’s true, ooh yeah
Hot fun in the summertime…..”
For some Alabama towns, today is the hottest day so far in 2007. At 2:00, Birmingham reported 92 degrees, thanks in part to very dry air (the surface dewpoint is only 55 for a humidity of 28 percent), and the lack of soil moisture. That is also the hottest temperature so far this year at that site.
The observation from Montgomery was showing 99 degrees at 2:00, but I sure get the idea that reading is bogus due to an equipment problem.
I think the computer models will struggle with temperature forecasts this summer; the MOS products today still look too low; I expect highs in the 90 to 95 degree range on a daily basis through the weekend, and into early next week. Dewpoints will be creeping up in coming days, and the humidity won’t be as low as today, unfortunately.
WHAT ABOUT RAIN? A major storm is moving out of the northern Rockies this afternoon, and a significant tornado outbreak is possible this evening and tonight over the Northern Plains, then moving eastward into the Great Lakes region by tomorrow afternoon. The surface front trailing this system could bring an increase in the number of scattered showers and storms to North Alabama by Friday and especially Saturday. A pool of tropical moisture lingers into Sunday and early next week, and we will continue to mention the chance of a passing shower or storm each afternoon in a few spots.
LONG RANGE: Still nothing too exciting showing up through mid-June, although the GFS suggests the most intense heat will be over the Southwest U.S. No sign of any tropical mischief in the Gulf of Mexico.
