Something on Radar

At 4:30 pm there were actually some echoes on radar. For just a moment I wasn’t sure what that was – just kidding, but it has been a while since I’ve seen any good echoes on the local radar.

Showers were occurring over Choctaw and Clarke counties with some edging into southern Marengo County not far from Dixons Mill and Sweet Water. The motion of the showers was northwest at about 20 mph.

I’m certainly not going against our forecast, but I am beginning to wonder if the GFS is missing out on this feature. It seems to me from looking at the regional radar that the showers are occurring with a very weak trough axis extending from just north of DFW to just south of New Orleans. The GFS continues to show that trough in the forecasts through the next several days, but it does not seem to take it seriously with very little precipitation being generated by it.

Now I’m not one to be too critical of the models because there is so much data going into them – more data than I can assimilate – but I am beginning to think that we may see some enhanced chances for scattered showers over the next couple of days. Especially if that trough axis gets a bit closer. And as dry as we are in Central and North Alabama, ANY shower activity would be welcome.

Guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. But IF we see more showers tomorrow and Thursday in our area, you saw it here first.
