At The Midnight Hour
Showers continue over about the SE third of Alabama very early on this second day of April. They were mostly light. Over in Central Georgia, the showers were heavier and there was some lightning in the mix. Moving eastward.
DEW POINT SITUATION AT MIDNIGHT
The dew point is very important when speculating on how big a severe weather event will be. (but, by all means, not the only ingredient in the pie) At midnight, here was the dew point profile across Alabama:
42 Haleyville and Muscle Shoals
57 Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston
65 average over Extreme South Alabama
70 Pensacola, Fort Walton (near or just south of old front)
The old semi-washed out frontal boundry was still right along the Gulf Coast at midinight. We will be watching closely the northern progression of deep, richer moisture (higher dew points) as today progresses. It seems that we are some 12 hours away from very active storms here in Central Alabama, maybe even a bit longer than that.
Someone asked about the next SPC post. It is normally scheduled for around 1 am, CDT. It can vary a bit.
Headed to bed to stockpile some extra sleep for the long marathon later today and tonight. Got a 3-hour power nap this evening. (So powerful that I did not know my name or where I was when I awoke near midnight)
