Alabama Weather Update – 11 p.m.

Things are generally quiet across North and much of Central Alabama late on this Friday evening.

Rain is entering West Alabama from Mississippi, from Marion and Lamar Counties down into Pickens, Greene and Sumter Counties. The rain was increasing along the Alabama/Mississippi border.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Sumter County in West Alabama.

The rain arcs across South Alabama, generally southwest of a Linden to Greenville to Ozark line.

Intense storms are in the Butler area in Choctaw County over to south of Meridian then down to Waynesboro, MS.

Intense storms were in the Hattiesburg area A tornado warning remains in effect for parts of Forrest County MS.

Severe thunderstorm warnings cover several counties in SE Mississippi and SW Alabama at this hour.

Widespread flooding is reported in the Hattiesburg area with many downtown streets under wayer and over a foot of water on Highway 49 near the USM campus. Golf ball sized hail was reported east of Hattiesburg, whhere the tornado warning continues.

Rain will continue to overspread Central Alabama from Mississippi over the next few hours.

Severe weather should be limited to South and South Central Alabama overnight, but could reach up into the Tuscaloosa and Birmingham areas.

A tornado watch comes as far north as Hale, Perry and Dallas Counties in South Central Alabama.

Further west, a line of intense storms extends from the Southwest corner of Mississippi down through Central Louisiana.

Over northern Louisiana, an area of intense storms extends from near Farmerville to Monroe. These storms are associated with the main low and frontal system. They will continue eastward overnight and could reach western Alabama shortly before dawn.

It remains to be seen what will happen during the day tomorrow as the cold front and low pressure system push east.

This is a powerful storm system and still has the potential to produce significant severe weather in Alabama, including the possibility of tornadoes.
