Wintry Weather in our Future?
WE STILL HAVE ACTIVE SEVERE WEATHER AND FLOODING ISSUES ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA THIS MORNING…PLEASE CONTINUE TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE LATEST WEATHER INFORMATION…BUT THERE IS ALSO A THREAT OF WINTRY WEATHER TONIGHT ACROSS PARTS OF ALABAMA.
Once this morning’s severe weather and flooding threat dies down, our attention will turn to the possibility of wintry weather tonight and Sunday morning.
Reading some dispatches from the National Weather Service Memphis…they are issuing winter storm warnings for their area including eastern Arkansas, western Tennessee and nothern Mississippi.
The surface low moving into West Alabama will allow colder air to be drawn down into the South this afternoon and tonight.
Meanwhile, a serious cold core upper low will move southeastward, Sleet and snow will occur from the Missouri bootheel into Arkansas.
It will start out as sleet then change to snow in the Memphis area this afternoon. They are expecting four inches in Memphis, and say that could be conservative.
They expect two inches of snow and sleet across their entire forecast area, with a 50 mile wide band extending northwest to southeast near the track of the upper low.
The NAM model seems to have a plausible solution, showing the precipitation moving into northern Mississippi and the northwest corner of Alabama during the evening, then spreading southeastward overnight.
Much of the snow will accumulate on grassy surfaces and roofs at first. But with a few hours of snow forecast, bridges and eventually roads could be snow covered and icy.
Snow accumulations of up to an inch, with a band of two inch amounts are possible tonight and early Sunday across some part of Northwest into North Central Alabama, perhaps along and west of US-78.
This is a developing winter weather situation. It will be possible to be really specific only as we see the situation unfolding on radar and satellite later this afternoon.
No winter advisories have been issued for Alabama yet by the National Weather Service offices in Birmingham or Huntsville, but they could be required later.
