Sleet Continues Over West Alabama

Precipitation streamed into Alabama ahead of schedule this morning. We have perfect conditions for sleet formation… rain falling through a layer of very dry and cold air. In this situation sleet will more readily form due to evaporative cooling that is going on. See the radar:

The higher reflectivity cores are associated with the ice pellets.

Temperatures at the surface, of course, are well above freezing and the sleet will simply melt after it falls. The big question is can the atmosphere recover enough for strong storms tomorrow. As always, watching the weather in Alabama is very interesting…
