A quick peek at a few 2:00 observations around Alabama:

Haleyville 26 (wind chill 17)
Decatur 27 (wind chill 17)
Gadsden 32 (wind chill 22)
Birmingham 33 (wind chill 23)

THREE DOG NIGHT: The wind will ease up a bit tonight, but not completely. Still, we believe most places will wind up somewhere between 10 and 15 degrees early tomorrow, with single digits for the colder valleys and protected areas of North Alabama.

Tomorrow will be similar to today, except the wind won’t be as strong. We will struggle to reach the mid 30s, and we go right back into the deep freeze tomorrow night. Most places will be in the 11 to 16 degree range early Saturday, and again there is potential for the colder valleys to reach the single digits.

All cold weather precautions will need to continue; check on elderly people that might not have adequate heating; bring in the pets, and wrap the pipes. You know the drill. Also, be very careful with space heaters; seems like we always hear of tragic house fires on extremely cold nights here.

REST OF THE WEEKEND: We should climb into the mid 40s Saturday afternoon; then clouds move in late Saturday night, and we are still going to mention some risk of light rain or light snow during the day Sunday with a lobe rotating through the base of the long wave upper trough over the eastern U.S. Moisture does look a little deeper over South Alabama, meaning a better chance of significant rain, but up this way moisture is very shallow.

NEXT WEEK: A fresh shot of colder air drops in on Monday; it now looks like we won’t get out of the 30s Monday with a brisk and cold northwest wind. Many communities could reach the upper teens Tuesday morning, followed by a moderating trend beginning Tuesday afternoon. The rest of the week looks dry with a warming trend.

VOODOO LAND: The 12Z GFS shows a nice rain producing system here around January 28… otherwise a moderating trend should continue through the last week of the month as the Polar jet retreats northward, at least temporarily.
