HAPPY THANKSGIVING: Be sure and read J.B.’s great post below… he is truly the Alabama weather legend. That was a great Thanksgiving piece.
THE DAYS AHEAD: Be sure and watch the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics that go along with this discussion…. Looks more and more like we can identify the best chance of steady rain from about 12:00 midnight tomorrow night through 3:00 p.m. Saturday. But, understand some light rain will be possible during the day tomorrow, and also Saturday afternoon and into Saturday night. The rain is in association with the lead impulse coming from the storm system now moving through the Southwest U.S. The NAM is printing 0.64″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is much more aggressive with 1.66″. I believe the NAM is closer to the truth… I think we can forecast rain amounts of one-half inch safely, with heavier amounts mostly over South Alabama.
There could be a little elevated thunder, but the air will be generally be cool and stable.
IRON BOWL: There is hope that the rain will begin to diminish as the game begins, but we will continue to forecast a good chance of rain during the Auburn/Alabama game Saturday in Tuscaloosa (2:30 p.m. kickoff). We will adjust temperatures upward a bit based on model trends; we will now project a kickoff temperature of 59 degrees. You will need to take the rain gear.
SUNDAY/MONDAY: The southern branch disturbance will phase with one in the northern stream, and a phased long wave trough will develop over the eastern U.S. This will pull down much colder air into Alabama as the surface wave moves to the northeast. Sunday could very well be a day of falling temperatures; looks like we might reach the low 50s before temperatures fall through the afternoon. A little light rain or drizzle is possible Sunday, not nothing significant. Then, as the cold air deepens, a few snow flurries are possible Sunday night into Monday morning. No accumulation is expected if we do see snow flakes unless we get a few convective snow showers, which looks unlikely at this time.
We will have a hard time getting out of the 30s Monday with a very cold north wind; we should be well below freezing by daybreak Tuesday. Then, a warming trend begins Tuesday afternoon.
