Munchkin Still Missing–a Special Story

NOTE: There is a category on this blog called “Miss Molly.” I very much appreciate James making that possible. However, I try to not post to it very often since this blog is mainly for weather.

But this post is not about Miss Molly. It is about Munchkin, a much-loved dog that has been missing a long time. I have never seen as much effort to find a lost pet. It is awesome. Melissa and Barry Smith, Tuscaloosa, own Munchkin. I received permission from Melissa to post the information below. It tells the complete story. including a web site and contact numbers:

A piece of our heart went missing last August when our dog, Munchkin, was lost while being boarded in Birmingham. She was lost on Montclair Road, and we’ve been searching for her ever since. In the months since she was lost, there have been possible sightings in the Crestwood, Forest Park, Avondale and Woodlawn areas. We have even checked out possible sightings in Roebuck, although we were never able to confirm that she had traveled that far.

We have never given up our belief that she is coming back home to us. Munchkin has been with me since she was a puppy, and she turns 8 years old this week. If you’ve ever had a pet that worked its way into your heart, then you can understand how hard it is to deal with one that has been lost. I have driven countless miles looking for her, and our other dog, Alex, and I have walked many of the neighborhoods near where she disappeared.

My husband and I live in Tuscaloosa, but we have a group of wonderful, dedicated volunteers who have been helping us search for her during these months. Just last weekend, 16 volunteers came to help us hand out flyers in a half-mile radius of where she was lost. We are so very appreciative of their help, because they are not allowing people to forget about Munchkin.

Since she was lost, stories about Munchkin have been on local TV news, in The Birmingham News and in other local publications. We are doing everything we can to spread the news about her situation. We feel that there is someone out there who has seen her, or who knows where she is, and we need to do all we can to reach that person.

We have a Web site where we have posted information, photos and access to downloadable flyers. To find out more, you can visit: www.FindMunchkin.com. She is listed on several online sites and local community bulletin boards.

We love Munchkin very, very much. It’s hard to explain how a dog can become a member of the family, but Munchkin has always been an expressive, sweet and animated girl. She is afraid of strangers, though, which is probably one reason that we’ve been unable to find her so far. It takes awhile for her to trust strangers. She is a 40-pound mixed breed who looks a bit like a small shepherd. One distinctive characteristic is that she has a tail that curls over her back. She is part Akita, and she has the tail to prove it! She hardly ever carries it down, unless she is very frightened, and then it is never completely uncurled.

There is a $2,200 reward for Munchkin’s safe return. Most of this money has been put up by our volunteers, who are dedicated to getting her back home with us. If you think you see her, please call 595-4440 (our vet’s office) or 540-1549. If you can’t reach anyone at those numbers, you can reach me at 205/792-6886. I’m an hour away, so please call the local numbers first.

We believe that Munchkin is safe and well, and that she is coming home soon. Thank you for helping make that happen.
