No Rain For The Next Five Days

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

BRIGHTER DAYS: The sky is clearing right on time across Alabama this afternoon as drier air works in from the northwest. At 1:00, the sun was shining at Muscle Shoals where the temperature was 56 degrees, but at Anniston clouds were still in place with a chilly 48 degrees. North winds have been gusting as high as 35 mph across the northern half of the state this afternoon as a surface low begins to deepen to the east.

THE WEEKEND: Cool and dry weather is the story for the weekend; the high tomorrow and Sunday will be in the 58 to 61 degree range, with early morning lows mostly in the low to mid 30s. Both the NAM and the GFS are printing 33 degrees for Birmingham early tomorrow morning; some of the colder spots will have a light freeze. The sky will be partly to mostly sunny both days.

NEXT WEEK: A cold front will drop southward into Kentucky early next week, but it will go stationary before impacting Alabama. In fact, at this point it looks like we will have dry and mild weather most of the week with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. The 12Z GFS suggests our next significant chance of rain will come one week from tomorrow, Saturday March 24.

LONG RANGE: The GFS continues to hint at a deep upper air system somewhere over the southern U.S. at the end of March; that might bring our next chance of strong to severe thunderstorms. But, of course, that is all voodoo at this point.

TIME TO PLANT: Lots of people asking about when it will be safe from late season frost. I remind you that the average date of our last freeze here is March 23, but we have seen a freeze as late as April 23, and snow flurries as late as April 26. Late season cold snaps are almost a given during the first half of April, so be careful this early in the season.

I enjoyed speaking to the second grade students this morning at Deer Valley Elementary School in Hoover… be watching for them on the KIDCAM today on ABC 33/40 News at 5:00. I am about to head out to Adamsville where I will be doing the weather live at 5:00 and 6:00; we will be giving away NOAA Weather Radio receivers to tornado victims there, and also promoting our clean-up today tomorrow. See the main ABC 33/40 site if you are interested in helping those who were impacted by the tornado in Adamsville on March 1.

Brian Peters will have the updates over the weekend; my next video will be early Monday morning by 7:00 a.m. Enjoy your weekend!
