Big Snowstorm Followup

We mentioned several days ago how Yellowstone National Park and other parts of the Mountain West were in for a significant early season snowstorm. (Too early!)

Well, didn’t it snow! Even beyond expectations.

This snowstorm will rank as the greatest to ever hit Lander, Wyoming during the month of October and the 7th largest snowstorm of all time. Remember, Winter does not arrive until December. Lander received 30 inches from this storm. Here is a rundown of some of the significant amounts:

WYOMING
20 inches at Red Canyon in Fremont County
30 inches Lander (NWS Office)
23 Marquette Park
19 Owl Creek
21 Timber Creek
14 Blind Bull Summit (I love that place name)
33 Homestead Park in Fremont County

MONTANA
49 inches near Limestone in Sweetgrass County
49 Red Lodge
15 Billings NWS Office
35 Fishtail
45 Roscoe

That 49-inch storm total in two locations in Montana was the most I could find.

A FEW OTHER COLD WEATHER NOTES:
* Barrow, Alaska has already received 12 inches of snow this season with 10 inches on the ground.

* Coldest temperature in the lower 48 this this morning was 8 above at Bryce Canyon, Utah.

* At 5:00 this morning, it was 11 degrees in Ely, Nevada and 17 in Flagstaff, Arizona.

* As of this morning, nearly 13% of the land area in the lower 48 states was covered by snow. Most of that, of course, is in the Mountain West, but that is a good early start
