SEVERAL WAVES OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS MOVED THROUGH CENTRAL ALABAMA
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. THESE THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCED WIDESPREAD LARGE
HAIL…LARGER THAN TENNIS BALLS IN SOME LOCATIONS. SEVERAL LOCATIONS
ALSO SUFFERED WIND DAMAGE…INCLUDING STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO METAL
ROOFS AND MOBILE HOMES.
…SHELBY COUNTY STORM SURVEY…
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS SURVEYED DAMAGE LOCATIONS IN
SOUTHERN SHELBY COUNTY NEAR MONTEVALLO. A LOW END EF1 TORNADO WITH
WINDS OF 90MPH BRIEFLY TOUCHED DOWN IN THE ALDRICH COMMUNITY. TEN TO
TWENTY HARD AND SOFTWOOD TREES IN HEALTHY CONDITION WERE EITHER
UPROOTED OR SNAPPED. A QUARTER OF THE ROOF FROM AN OUTBUILDING
WAS PEELED BACK AND TOSSED 50 YARDS. TOTAL PATH LENGTH OF THIS BRIEF
TORNADO IS 300 YARDS…WITH A PATH WIDTH OF 50 YARDS.
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CONTINUES TO INVESTIGATE OTHER DAMAGE
LOCATIONS…WHERE ORGANIZED AREAS OF DAMAGE MIGHT BE ATTRIBUTED TO
TORNADO TOUCHDOWN. ADDITIONAL PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENTS WILL BE
ISSUED WITH ANY UPDATED INFORMATION REGARDING CONFIRMED TORNADO
DAMAGE.
