Bill,

Just out of curiosity – what is the coldest Alabama football game on record? A lot of people seem to glance back to the 1992 SEC Championship game as the coldest in recent memory. What do you say? Take wind chill into account. I think people’s memories tend to favor the more recent games, but I’m very curious about this one.

The gauntlet has been thrown down!

Jamie

Well, Jamie…using climate data from Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Montgomery (Auburn is not readily available right now) the following ranking of my estimates of the mean temperature during the Alabama Auburn games follows. I estimated the game time temperature and game end temperature, assuming most games were afternoon games (again, complete information unavailable over the holiday).

The top 11 ranking is sorted in ascending order of game mean temp, coldest first.

I was at the 1992 game and can vouch for the fact that it was very, very cold. I am sure many of you may have been at the 2000 game, which was played in a cold rain at Tuscaloosa.

Now, it’s your turn. Give me your recollections, memories and data for the coldest Iron Bowls that you remember. And nominate your wettest and windiest Alabama-Auburn contests.
