Smoke from a prescribed burn in Winston County has drifted into the Birmingham area, prompting a Code Red Air Quality Alert for Jefferson and Shelby Counties on Tuesday.. Air quality is not good tonight either.
IMPROVING WEATHER: The sky has becoming sunny across the northern 2/3 of Alabama this afternoon as dry air returns; clouds over the southern counties will move out this evening. Tonight will be mostly clear with a low in the 40s. We might see a few spots over North Alabama in the upper 30s.
The rain has ended and the sky is clearing across the state this afternoon; temperatures this afternoon are generally in the low and mid 60s. Tonight, expect a clear and chilly night with lows in the upper 30s to lower 40s.
RADAR CHECK: We have large areas of rain across parts of Alabama this morning; the rain should be out of the state completely by early afternoon, followed by gradual clearing. Temperatures will rise into the low to mid 60s this afternoon.
No severe storms are expected across Central Alabama this afternoon, but we are monitoring a severe weather threat that is firming up for Saturday.
Today will bring rain and cooler temperatures as spring approaches, with fluctuating conditions, midweek showers, and a gradual warming trend into next week.
There are a couple of storms over South Central Alabama tonight with gusty winds and lightning, but there won’t be severe. Closer to the coast, there could be some severe weather overnight.
Showers will continue to stream in from the west throughout the remainder of the day, with most of that taking place over the Tennessee Valley.
The guided-missile destroyer USS McFaul arrived in Mobile for a scheduled port visit, in conjunction with the city’s 2025 Mardi Gras celebration, February 28.

PLEASANT MARCH AFTERNOON: Temperatures are in the 65-72 degree range across Alabama this afternoon with a partly to mostly sunny sky. Clouds will increase tonight, and a few spotty showers are possible as moisture levels rise.
When the Alabama Tourism Department selects a feature or activity in the state to highlight for its “The Year of” designation, that campaign normally lasts for one year.
Today is warmer with a mix of sun and clouds; highs are in the upper 60s and low 70s. Clouds continue to increase tonight, and with the clouds in place, lows will hold in the lower 50s in most locations. A few isolated showers are possible tonight, but not likely.
