Rain is overspreading the state this afternoon ahead of a developing surface low over southwestern Mississippi. As the low approaches this evening, there will be a chance of severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and brief tornadoes.
Alabama is experiencing its own atmospheric river out of the Gulf of Mexico tonight, bringing very heavy rain and the potential for flooding. There is still a severe weather threat to the south as well.

There is still the potential for damaging winds over areas northwest of I-59 later tonight, but the threat for significant severe weather appears to be lessening.
More rain and storms will overspread areas south of I-59 later today. A severe weather threat continues for the southern half of Alabama along with a flood threat across the southeastern half of the area.
