Midday Nowcast: Partly Sunny Today; Drier Week of Weather Ahead
We are seeing a partly sunny sky today, with some showers mainly confined to the southern half of the state. Highs are in the low to mid 80s this afternoon.
RADAR CHECK: We note a few showers and thunderstorms over Southwest Alabama this morning, but the rest of the state is dry with temperatures mostly in the 70-75 degree range. We expect a partly sunny sky today, and showers will be mainly confined to the southern half of the state.
A good-looking Wednesday is underway across Alabama with plenty of sunshine and blue sky. There are a few areas of clouds, but overall, the sky is featuring more sunshine.
DRIER AIR MOVING INTO NORTH ALABAMA: After a wet/stormy night, drier air is beginning to enter North Alabama this morning. Most of the showers and thunderstorms during the day today will be found across the southern third of the state; the sky becomes partly to mostly sunny over the northern counties with a high in the upper 80s.
COLD FRONT PASSING THROUGH: A cold front is moving through Alabama this morning; we note a few spotty showers over the central part of the state at daybreak. This afternoon, showers will be confined to the southern third of the state ahead of the front, and the northern counties will enjoy a mostly sunny day with lower humidity and a fresh north breeze.
RADAR CHECK: Showers and storms are confined to the immediate Gulf Coast early this morning; the rest of the state is dry with temperatures in the 70s. A drier airmass will drop into North Alabama today; most of the scattered showers and storms will be over the southern counties this afternoon. Otherwise, look for a partly sunny sky today with a high between 87 and 91 degrees.
TRENDING DRIER: A rare August “cold” front is sagging southward across Alabama this morning, and drier air now covers the northern half of the state. With the lower precipitable water values, most of North/Central Alabama will experience a dry day today with just a small risk of a shower. With a partly sunny sky, we expect a high in the 84-87 degree range; the average high for August 3 at Birmingham is 91.
RADAR CHECK: Showers and storms are confined to far South Alabama and the Florida Panhandle early this morning where a flash flood watch remains in effect. The northern 2/3 of the state is getting a break from the rain as drier air has arrived. For North/Central Alabama, we expect morning clouds to give way to a partly sunny afternoon… the high today will be in the mid 70s for most places.
CALMER DAY: After a day of violent tornadoes responsible for at least five deaths in Alabama and extensive damage, the weather today will be much calmer. A band of showers early this morning is along a cold front lined up from near Lafayette to Montgomery to Grove Hill. Showers over Alabama today will be confined to the southern half of the state… elsewhere the sky becomes partly sunny with a high in the mid 70s.
STORMS ARE GONE: After a long day and night of severe thunderstorms, drier air is over Alabama this morning. Clouds will linger today, but we do expect some sun at times this afternoon with a high in the mid 60s. The average high for Birmingham on April 13 is 74.
TRENDING DRIER: Rain lingers, mainly over the eastern half of Alabama early this morning. The rain will continue to taper off from west to east in coming hours, and by afternoon any lingering showers will be over the southeast counties of the state. The day will be breezy and cooler with temperatures falling through the 50s, and some clearing could begin over North and West Alabama this afternoon.
RADAR CHECK: We have a few lingering showers over the eastern half of the state early this morning; most of those should be gone by the time you read this. The sky becomes partly sunny as a slot of dry air punches into the state. We will mention a chance of isolated showers this afternoon over North Alabama as an upper trough passes overhead, but the moisture will be very limited, and most places will be dry. The high today will be in the mid to upper 50s; the average high for January 24 at Birmingham is 54.
RADAR CHECK: Patches of mostly light rain continue this morning mainly in areas south and east of Birmingham ahead of a rather rare July surface front over the Tennessee Valley. This front will continue to push southward today, and by afternoon almost all of the showers and storms will be down over the southern half of the state. The sky becomes partly sunny over North Alabama with a high in the mid 80s.
RADAR CHECK: As forecast, we have strong thunderstorms over the eastern half of Alabama this afternoon. They are all east of I-65, and some of the heavier storms are producing gusty winds and small hail. Otherwise, we have a mix of sun and clouds across the state with afternoon temperatures in the 80s away from the showers.
