Hot/Muggy Weather Continues; A Few Pop-Up Storms

SUMMERTIME WEATHER: It is a familiar forecast for Alabama today, and each day for the rest of the week. An upper ridge covers the southern U.S.. and the primary band of westerly winds aloft (the jet stream) is well to the north, not far from the Canadian border. This leaves us in a pattern of hot humid days with the risk of showers and thunderstorms during the peak of the daytime heating process. They form in random, scattered places, and there is no way of knowing in advance exactly when and where they pop up. And, they are most likely between 1:00 and 9:00 p.m.

TIS THE SEASON: Alabama’s weather won’t change much through the weekend. Look for the typical summer weather… hot humid days with a mix of sun and clouds, and scattered, random showers and thunderstorms. Most of the storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, although a late night or morning shower sure can’t be ruled out. No way of knowing in advance when and where the storms fire up; you just have to keep a close eye on radar trends if you have something planned outside. Afternoon highs will be in the 88-92 degree range today through Sunday.

MUGGY SUMMER DAYS: In the moist air over Alabama we have showers on radar at daybreak over parts of North and Central Alabama… they are moving eastward, and won’t last long. More scattered showers or storms could form this afternoon and this evening; odds of any one spot getting wet will be about one in four. Otherwise, expect a mix of sun and clouds today with a high close to 90.

TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Not much change tomorrow; a partly sunny sky with a few scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers or storms; the high will be in the upper 80s. Then, the weather looks hot and mostly dry Friday through Sunday with a good supply of sunshine each day with a high close to 90 degrees. Afternoon showers can’t be ruled out, but they should be few and far between as Alabama get in the zone of sinking air on the far periphery of Hurricane Florence.

RADAR CHECK: The majority of the showers and thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon are down across the southern half of the state; showers are pretty isolated over the northern counties. The sky is generally cloudy, and temperatures are mostly in the 80s. Scattered showers will fade away later tonight.

MUST BE AUGUST IN ALABAMA: Not much change in the weather situation today across Alabama; lots of sun this morning, followed by temperatures rising into the 90s this afternoon helping to generate a few random, scattered thunderstorms during the peak of the daytime heat. The chance of any one spot getting wet this afternoon is about one in three, and most of the storms will form between 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. The high will be in the 93-96 degree range for most communities.

CLASSIC DOG DAY AFTERNOON: Today’s weather is just what you expect in early August in Alabama. It is hot, humid, the sky is partly sunny, and we have a few random, scattered storms in progress during the heat of the day. Most of the storms are over North and West Alabama, they are moving very little, and will dissipate once the sun goes down later this evening.

REST OF THE WEEK: Moisture levels will slowly rise statewide, and we will mention “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms” on a daily basis through Friday. Chance of any one spot getting wet tomorrow is around 30 percent, and then in he 40/50 percent range Thursday and Friday. Highs will be pretty close to 90 as hot, humid summer weather continues.

WET AT TIMES: We begin this day with a good supply of sunshine this morning, but developing showers and thunderstorms are a good possibility this afternoon and tonight as a surface front approaches Alabama from the north. The chance of any one spot getting wet later today and tonight is about 50/50, and the high this afternoon will be pretty close to 90 degrees.

HAPPY FOURTH! On this Independence Day, we have your classic summer mix of sun, heat, humidity, and thunderstorms. Scattered storms this afternoon are moving westward, on the bottom of a strong upper high to the north. This “backwards” storm motion is pretty common in Alabama during the summer months, when the mid-latitude westerlies shift well to the north.

EARLY MORNING FIREWORKS: An easterly wave was responsible for the development of some robust thunderstorms across Alabama during the pre-dawn hours; they brought nature’s fireworks with a vivid lightning display, and in some cases strong, gusty winds. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for parts of Shelby and St. Clair Counties a little before 3:00 a.m…. a few trees were brought down by that storm. The storms have mostly dissipated at daybreak.
