ROUTINE SUMMER WEATHER: Alabama’s weather won’t change much through Friday, as an upper ridge stays over the region. Partly sunny, hot, humid days with random, scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms on a daily basis. Highs will be in the low 90s, and the chance of any one spot getting wet is 35-45 percent. Just what you expect in mid-August.
RADAR CHECK: We have the usual array of small, random, scattered showers and thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon. The showers are short lived, and moving slowly to the east. Away from them, the sky is partly sunny with temperatures mostly in the low 90s. Scattered showers will end tonight after sunset.
ROUTINE AUGUST WEATHER: Alabama’s weather won’t change much for the rest of the week. Look for partly sunny, hot, humid days with random, scattered showers and thunderstorms around each day, mostly between 1:00 and 10:00 p.m. The chance of any one neighborhood seeing rain each afternoon will be in the 30-40 percent range, and afternoon highs will be in the 90-93 degree range.
RADAR CHECK: We have the usual array of random, scattered showers and thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon. Stronger storms are producing heavy rain and lots of lightning… they are moving to the east and will gradually end tonight after sunset. Away from the showers, temperatures are mostly in the low 90s; the average high for Birmingham on August 9 is 91.
JUST WHAT YOU EXPECT IN SUMMER: A flat upper ridge covers the Deep South, and will remain in place through the week. This keeps the main mid-latitude westerly winds aloft (the jet stream) well to the north, and will set the stage for very routine August weather. We are forecasting partly sunny days with the daily round of random, scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms.
RADAR CHECK: There are multiple clusters of showers and strong thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon, but as usual it is not raining everywhere. Away from the showers, we are seeing some low 90s over the western side of the state, but some communities have cooled down into the 70s because of clouds and rain. SPC maintains a “marginal risk” of severe storms for the northern 2/3 of Alabama tonight… heavier thunderstorms could produce strong winds and small hail.
RADAR CHECK: As advertised this morning, scattered showers and thunderstorms have returned to Alabama this afternoon. So far, they have been mostly on the western side of the state, where temperatures have cooled into the 70s. East Alabama is relatively dry with upper-80s in most spots. Showers and storms will slowly fade late tonight.
RADAR CHECK: As is typically the case in late May, this day is very warm, very humid, and we have random, scattered showers and thunderstorms in progress. They are moving to the east, and heavier storms are capable of producing small hail and gusty winds.
CLASSIC SUMMER DAY: Humidity values are back up across Alabama today, and accordingly, scattered showers and thunderstorms have returned as well. Some places have seen a big downpour today, other places are bone dry. Storms are most numerous over North and West Alabama at mid-afternoon, and they are drifting to the southwest. They will dissipate after sunset.
SCATTERED STRONG STORMS: Radar shows scattered, strong thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon… the more numerous ones are south of I-20, and are producing strong gusty winds and lots of lightning as they move southeast. Away from the storms, we have a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s.
RADAR CHECK: Scattered thunderstorms are increasing across Alabama this afternoon; most of them so far are over the northeast counties of the state. Other storms over Arkansas and West Tennessee will move into the state this evening; all of them are moving to the southeast. SPC maintains a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) for roughly the northern half of Alabama through tonight… some of the heavier storms will be capable of producing strong, gusty straight line winds.
RADAR CHECK: Most of the scattered showers and thunderstorms across Alabama are over the southern counties of the state this afternoon, south of a boundary set up by a large rain mass over the northern part of the state last night. Showers are moving slowly to the southeast, and they will fade away once the sun goes down. Temperatures are generally below average for early August… most communities are in the upper 80s over the north and central part of the state.
MUST BE AUGUST IN ALABAMA: Looks like the atmosphere will deliver some classic summer weather across Alabama this week. Most days will begin with a good supply of sunshine. Then, as the lower atmosphere heats up, the air becomes buoyant, and by afternoon we will have an array of random, slow moving scattered showers and thunderstorms.
RADAR CHECK: Like recent days, we have your classic case of random, scattered, showers and thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon. Heavier storms are producing frequent lightning, gusty winds, and small hail. They are moving very little, and some neighborhoods are getting drenched. But, other places are bone dry. So it goes on summer days in Alabama. Storms will settle down after sunset.
