Look for a mix of sun and clouds today and tomorrow with the usual threat of random, scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Chance of any one spot getting wet today is around 30 percent, and 40 to 50 percent tomorrow.

RADAR CHECK: The area of rain associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Danny is now over the northwest corner of Alabama this afternoon… otherwise we have a mix of sun and clouds with a few widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures are in the 70s over the northwest counties due to clouds and lingering rain… most other places are in the low to mid 80s. The average high for June 29 at Birmingham is 90. Scattered showers will end tonight after sunset.

Like most June days, we will have the risk of a few random, “pop up” afternoon showers or storms today and tomorrow, but they should be pretty widely spaced. QUIET MORNING: While Hurricane Laura is moving northward well to the west of Alabama, our weather is quiet this morning. A decent part of the day will be dry with a partly sunny sky, but we do expect a few scattered showers and thunderstorms by mid to late afternoon into tonight. But the direct wind and rain associated with Laura will remain well to the west of Alabama. Today will be hot and humid with a high between 89 and 93 degrees for most communities.

We do note a big flooding event unfolded this morning over Northwest Alabama; parts of Franklin County had over 6 inches of rain, and a flash flood emergency was issued by NWS Huntsville for a while. STILL HOT, STILL HUMID: Alabama’s weather will be pretty much what you expect in mid to late July; we are forecast hot, humid days through the weekend with just a handful of isolated showers and thunderstorms around during the afternoon and evening hours. There is a surface front north of the state today that might bring strong storms to parts of Tennessee, but that front has no chance of moving into Alabama thanks to a strong upper ridge overhead.
