WARM, HUMID SUMMER DAYS: A blanket of moist, tropical air will cover Alabama for the rest of the week. Look for a mix of sun and clouds today and tomorrow with the usual threat of random, scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Chance of any one spot getting wet today is around 30 percent, and 40 to 50 percent tomorrow.
RADAR CHECK: The area of rain associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Danny is now over the northwest corner of Alabama this afternoon… otherwise we have a mix of sun and clouds with a few widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures are in the 70s over the northwest counties due to clouds and lingering rain… most other places are in the low to mid 80s. The average high for June 29 at Birmingham is 90. Scattered showers will end tonight after sunset.
RADAR CHECK: As expected, showers are few and far between across Alabama this afternoon. The sky is partly to mostly sunny with temperatures mostly in the upper 80s. The small, isolated showers will dissipate after sunset.
MOSTLY DRY TODAY: Precipitable water values are a bit lower across Alabama this morning, and we expect only isolated afternoon showers and storms this afternoon and into the evening hours. Odds of any one spot getting wet are 15-20 percent… otherwise look for a partly to mostly sunny sky today with a high around 90 degrees. The average high for Birmingham on June 28 is 90.
RADAR CHECK: As expected, showers are relatively scarce over the northern half of Alabama this afternoon… most of the showers and storms are over the southern counties, mainly south of U.S. 80 (Demopolis to Montgomery to Opelika). Away from showers, temperatures are in the 80s with a mix of sun and clouds over North/Central Alabama. The rain over the southern counties will diminish tonight after sunset.
MUGGY JUNE DAYS: Warm, humid weather will continue across Alabama through the weekend. Like most June days, we will have the risk of a few random, “pop up” afternoon showers or storms today and tomorrow, but they should be pretty widely spaced. Odds of any one spot getting wet through tomorrow are in the 20-25 percent range… otherwise look for partly sunny days with highs between 85 and 89 degrees.
QUIET MORNING: While Hurricane Laura is moving northward well to the west of Alabama, our weather is quiet this morning. A decent part of the day will be dry with a partly sunny sky, but we do expect a few scattered showers and thunderstorms by mid to late afternoon into tonight. But the direct wind and rain associated with Laura will remain well to the west of Alabama. Today will be hot and humid with a high between 89 and 93 degrees for most communities.
QUIET AFTERNOON: As expected, showers are very isolated across Alabama today. The sky is partly sunny, and temperatures are mostly in the upper 80s and low 90s. We do note a big flooding event unfolded this morning over Northwest Alabama; parts of Franklin County had over 6 inches of rain, and a flash flood emergency was issued by NWS Huntsville for a while. That large rain mass diminished and drifted into Tennessee later in the morning.
STILL HOT, STILL HUMID: Alabama’s weather will be pretty much what you expect in mid to late July; we are forecast hot, humid days through the weekend with just a handful of isolated showers and thunderstorms around during the afternoon and evening hours. There is a surface front north of the state today that might bring strong storms to parts of Tennessee, but that front has no chance of moving into Alabama thanks to a strong upper ridge overhead.
JULY IN ALABAMA: It is the time of the year when the weather doesn’t change much. Say “hot and humid with a few isolated afternoon storms” and you will be right on the money. That is our situation for at least the next seven days as an upper high holds over the Deep South keeping the main westerly winds aloft (the jet stream) well to the north.
QUIET AFTERNOON: As expected, there is very little on radar across Alabama this afternoon. The sky is partly to mostly sunny, and temperatures are mostly in the low 90s, right at seasonal averages for mid-July. There are a handful of showers over the southern half of the state, and they will dissipate once the sun goes down.
HOT, HUMID SUMMER WEATHER: Look for a high in the low 90s today, and mid 90s tomorrow as heat levels continue to rise across Alabama. The sky will be partly sunny both days, and while showers and thunderstorms are possible, they will be few and far between. Then, on Sunday, a surface boundary will slice into the hot, humid, unstable air, and will set the stage for strong, possibly severe thunderstorms.
RADAR CHECK: In the tropical air over Alabama we have a number of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, some producing heavy amounts of rain. Showers over the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama are moving very little, while the rain bands over the central counties are moving eastward. They will persist into the night.
AN OCEAN OF HUMIDITY: Very moist, tropical air will remain over the Deep South today, and we expect scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. In fact, showers have already formed early this morning across parts of North/Central Alabama. And, like recent days, the showers will be very efficient rain producers. We will have more clouds than sun, and the high today will be in the mid 80s for most communities. The average high for July 8 at Birmingham is 91.
