Temperatures are holding in the 30s today, and an icy north wind has wind chills below freezing. Lingering moisture is allowing for some snow flurries to fly through the air across the northern half of Alabama, but no travel impacts will occur.
We continue to see dry and sunny weather today with temperatures right where they should be this time of year; highs in the low to mid 50s. An “Alberta Clipper” system is moving through the state today and will bring colder air to the state tonight and tomorrow. Lows tonight will fall into the 20s.
WINDY AFTERNOON: Westerly winds are gusting to 30/35 mph across much of North Alabama this afternoon with mostly sunny sky. Temperatures range from the 50s over the northern counties, to the 70s over South Alabama.
It is a breezy and cold day across Alabama; temperatures are in the 40s and with the wind, it is feeling much colder. By tomorrow morning a freeze is expected with upper 20s likely.
It is a cold and breezy day across Alabama, despite plenty of sunshine, temperatures are struggling to climb out of the 40s. Add in that brisk north wind and wind chills have been in the 20s and 30s today.
The rain and storms are out of here and the cold front is making its way through the state. This afternoon, temperatures are falling as a much drier and colder air mass blows into the state.
Sunshine, blue sky, and below average temperatures highlight the forecast for today and tomorrow. Highs today will not make it out of the 50s and with a brisk north wind, it feels chillier.
RADAR CHECK: The rain shield associated with Helene is over the northeast corner of Alabama early this morning; the rest of the state is dry. The circulation of Helene will be absorbed by a deep upper low near Memphis over the next 24 hours, and we expect another band of showers to wrap into the northern third of the state this afternoon and tonight.
WINDY AFTERNOON: Gradient winds are gusting to 30-40 mph over the western half of Alabama this afternoon as the remnant circulation of Francine moves up I-55 in Mississippi. At mid-afternoon about 42,000 are without power in Alabama… the winds will slowly diminish tonight.
WINDY, WET DAY AHEAD: Rain is widespread across Alabama this morning as Francine moves up into South Mississippi as a weakening tropical low.
It remains a mostly cloudy day with some lingering showers over the northern half of the state. It is cooler and breezy with temperatures struggling to climb out of the 60s.
Rain and storms are on their way to Alabama, and it is going to be a wet, windy, and stormy Wednesday afternoon and evening across Alabama.
SEVERE STORM POTENTIAL: Rain becomes more widespread across Alabama this afternoon and tonight, along with the potential for strong thunderstorms. We believe the main risk of severe storms will be across far South Alabama and the Florida Panhandle, along and south of a line from Grove Hill to Evergreen to Headland.
TONIGHT: A band of showers and thunderstorms will push into Alabama late tonight, mostly after midnight. Thankfully there will be little to no surface based instability available over the northern 2/3 of the state, so the line of storms will be weakening, and the threat of severe storms remains low in our state.
