The more concentrated showers are over the southwest counties of the state at mid-afternoon… away from the summer rain temperatures are mostly in the low 90s. The average high for July 4 in Birmingham is 90. Scattered showers and storms end tonight after sunset.
CLASSIC SUMMER WEATHER CONTINUES: Alabama’s weather won’t change much this week as the classic summer pattern continues. Look for partly sunny, hot, humid days with random, scattered showers and thunderstorms firing up during the afternoon and evening hours. Most of the summer soakers will come from 2:00 until 10:00 p.m… and odds of any one place getting wet are in the 30-40 percent range most of the week.

WELCOME TO JULY: We begin the second month of meteorological summer with the usual mix of sun and scattered thunderstorms across Alabama and the Deep South through the holiday weekend. Look for partly sunny days with highs in the 86-90 degree range. Random, scattered showers and storms will form mainly during the afternoon and evening hours, from roughly 2:00 until 10:00 p.m. We just can’t tell you in advance exactly when and where the storms fire up; for outdoor events just keep a close eye on radar trends.
RADAR CHECK: Showers and thunderstorms are active this afternoon in a band from York and Livingston in West Alabama, down through places like Camden and Andalusia in South Alabama. Other random storms are forming over the northeast and eastern counties as well… otherwise we have a mix of sun and clouds today with temperatures mostly in the mid to upper 80s.
HUMID SUMMER DAYS WITH SUN AND STORMS: Our classic summer weather pattern will continue across Alabama through the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Humid days with a mix of sun and clouds, and random, scattered showers and thunderstorms. It won’t rain everywhere each day, but where storms do form, they will be slow movers with potential for heavy rain, gusty winds, and very frequent lightning.
RADAR CHECK: Random, scattered showers and thunderstorms are developing over the northern half of Alabama this afternoon, otherwise the sky is partly sunny with temperatures mostly in the upper 80s. Storms have been more widespread today over the southwest counties, where heavy rain was falling along the Alabama Gulf Coast at times this morning. Like recently days, storms this afternoon are slow movers and are producing heavy rain, gusty winds, and lots of lightning. Most of the showers and storms will dissipate by 10:00 tonight.
CLASSIC SUMMER PATTERN: If you are new to Alabama, this kind of weather is just what we expect in summer. Partly sunny, very humid days with random, scattered showers and storms around during the afternoon and evening hours. This is our forecast for the rest of the week; highs will be in the 86-90 degree range for most places, right at seasonal averages. Concerning the afternoon storms, there is no way of knowing in advance exactly when and where they pop up… you just have to watch radar trends if you have an outdoor event planned.
RADAR CHECK: As expected, a number of scattered showers and thunderstorms are developing over Central Alabama this afternoon; most of them are south of I-59, the approximate location of a stalled surface front. Like yesterday, stronger storms will be capable of producing heavy rain, gusty winds, small hail, and lots of lightning. Away from the storms, we have a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures in the mid to upper 80s over most of the state.
SUN AND STORMS: A weak surface front is stalled across Alabama this morning, not too early from I-20. This means most of the showers and storms today, like yesterday, will be over the southern 2/3 of the state, but an isolated shower can’t be ruled out over North Alabama as well this afternoon. Odds of any one spot getting wet today are 35-45 percent along and south of I-20, and 15-25 percent north of I-20
