ANOTHER VERY WARM, HUMID JUNE DAY: Alabama’s weather won’t change much today. Highs in the upper 80s, a partly sunny sky, and widely scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and early tonight. Chance of any one spot getting wet later today about one in four.
TYPICAL JUNE WEATHER: A muggy, maritime tropical airmass covers Alabama and the Deep South this morning, and we expect more routine early summer weather through tomorrow. Partly sunny, humid days with a few scattered showers and storms around, most all of the coming during the peak of the daytime heating process between 2:00 and 9:00 p.m.
RADAR CHECK: Most of the showers and storms across Alabama this afternoon are east and south of Birmingham… they are drifting slowly to the west (this “backwards motion” happens fairly often in summer as westerly winds aloft retreat to the north).
TYPICAL JUNE WEATHER: All is quiet across Alabama this morning, but we expect scattered, random showers and storms to develop this afternoon and early tonight in the moist environment across the Deep South. Otherwise, today will be partly sunny with a high in the mid to upper 80s, right at seasonal averages.
WELCOME TO METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER: Those of us in the weather business consider summer from June 1 through August 31… it makes it much easier for record keeping. In terms of astronomy, however, summer begins on the day of the solstice; this year on June 20 at 11:24p CT.
Dewpoints are in the 66-70 degree range across Alabama early this morning with temperatures near 70 degrees, making it feel more like July. Nothing on radar, but later today a few scattered showers or storms could pop up during the heat of the day in this moist environment.
As expected, we have a classic case of scattered, random showers and thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon in the warm, humid, unstable airmass…
It is a warm, humid morning across Alabama; some places are still in the low 70s at daybreak. We project a high in the mid to upper 80s this afternoon with a mix of sun and clouds, and we will see showers and storms forming during the heat of the day in scattered, random spots. The chance of any one spot getting wet today is about one in three.
RADAR CHECK: We have a few widely scattered showers and storms on radar this afternoon… moving slowly to the south… Away from the showers, the sky is partly sunny with temperatures pretty close to 90 degrees. Showers will fade once the sun goes down. TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: The upper ridge across the Deep South […]
RADAR CHECK: Another day with a random pattern of scattered showers and storms across Alabama… slowly moving northeast… Temperatures are in the low 90s, right at seasonal levels for mid-August in Alabama. TOMORROW/FRIDAY: The upper ridge over the region will weaken a bit, and we expect to see an increase in the number of scattered […]
ANOTHER DOG DAY AFTERNOON: It’s that time of the year when weather forecasting gets into a rut. Most days in August, if you say the weather will be hot and humid with the chance of an afternoon storm in spots, you will have it nailed. And that is the story today. Morning sunshine, scattered showers […]
RADAR CHECK: So far today showers and storms are few and far between across Alabama… The sky is partly sunny, and temperatures are generally in the low 90s. Widely scattered showers and storms will end later this evening. Not much change tomorrow; morning sunshine, then showers and storms will form by afternoon in random, scattered […]
MUST BE MID-AUGUST: Some pretty classic summer weather will continue for Alabama through tomorrow… partly sunny, hot, humid days with a few widely scattered showers and storms around during the afternoon and evening hours. Highs generally in the 90-93 degree range, right at seasonal averages. THURSDAY/FRIDAY: The upper ridge begins to weaken a bit, and […]
