Some Rain Tonight; Wet Start To The Weekend

| January 7, 2016 @ 5:46 am

NOT MUCH SUN THROUGH THE WEEKEND: We are starting off the day in the 35-40 degree range at most places, and we rise into the low to mid 50s this afternoon. The sky will be mostly cloudy, but the day should be generally dry. Then, tonight, some light rain is likely across the state. Moisture will be limited, and rain amounts will be under 1/4 inch for most spots; a few communities might not see enough rain to measure.

Then, tomorrow will be mostly cloudy and warmer with an afternoon high close to 60 degrees. The chance of rain during the day will be rather small.

THE WEEKEND: It starts off wet. Rain is likely Saturday as a deepening surface low forms north of Alabama… we will forecast periods of rain, and maybe even a thunderstorm or two as the air becomes unstable. Temperatures will reach the low 60s Saturday afternoon, but there is no risk of severe weather. Rain amounts of 1/2 to 3/4 inch are likely by Saturday night.

Then, Sunday will be breezy, raw, and cold day with lingering clouds, a little drizzle, and falling temperatures. The latest data suggests we settle into the 38-42 degree range by afternoon, with even colder air up north near the Tennessee border. There might even be a few snow flurries in the cold air over the Tennessee Valley, but no impact.

NEXT WEEK: The week is looking generally cold and dry, with temperatures well below average. Highs will be mostly in the 40s, and lows generally in the 20s, but Wednesday could be a day with highs only in the 30s as a secondary surge of cold air drops into the state.

Both global models show a wave with potential for some rain around Saturday January 16… see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Saturday, Jacksonville State plays North Dakota State for the FCS National Championship Saturday in Frisco, Texas (north of Dallas; 11:00a CT kickoff). Expect a mix of sun and clouds; just a small risk of a shower early in the game. Temperatures will rise from 42 degrees at kickoff, to near 46 by the final whistle.

The FBS National Championship game, Alabama vs Clemson, is Monday at Glendale, Arizona (7:30p CT kickoff). Despite a good bit of rain for Phoenix this week, the weather looks cool and dry for the game with temperatures falling from the mid 50s at kickoff, into the upper 40s by the second half. The stadium has a roof, but it will be pretty chilly walking to and from your transportation.
