Warm Christmas Weather
**No Weather Xtreme video this afternoon; we are on a holiday schedule**
FLOODING OVER SOUTH AND EAST ALABAMA: Many South and East Alabama counties are under flash flood warnings this afternoon…
Rain amounts have exceeded five inches in many places, and in some counties roads have been washed out. The image below is a road washed out in Lanett. Photo taken by Matthew Thrower.
Birmingham’s high so far today is 74, actually recorded a little after midnight. Not a record, but close… the record high for Christmas Eve is 77 set in 1964.
CHRISTMAS DAY: Warm, unsettled weather continues. A warm front will lift northward, and showers are possible. A few storms could form as well, and there is a “marginal” severe weather risk for the northern counties of the state.
Both the NAM and the GFS models are printing a high of 75 for Birmingham tomorrow, and if they verifies it will break the old record of 74, set in 1987.
THE WEEKEND: Still warm. More clouds than sun Saturday and Sunday with a chance of showers both days. Highs up in the mid 70s.
A major storm system will bring showers and storms to the state Monday, and there will be some potential for strong to severe thunderstorms…
Still too early to determine the actual severe weather threat here; we will be much more specific in coming days.
Cooler and drier air follows the system by mid-week.
BIRMINGHAM BOWL: Auburn will take on Memphis at Legion Field next Wednesday; kickoff is at 11:00 a.m. At this point the weather looks good; the sky mostly cloudy but only a small risk of a shower. Temperatures will rise from near 50 at kickoff, into the mid 50s by the final whistle.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
