RADAR CHECK: A few small, isolated showers have formed over West Alabama this afternoon… they are drifting south.

Most of the state is dry, with temperatures in the 80s. Birmingham has soared to 87 degrees at 3:00 p.m…. nine degrees above average, and within 6 degrees of the record high of 93, set in 1925. The small showers west of I-65 will end soon after sunset, and tonight will be mostly fair.

TOMORROW: Another very warm day with a high in the mid 80s along with a partly sunny sky. Any showers tomorrow afternoon, like today, will be few and far between.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY: An upper low over the Southwest U.S. will open up and lift out to the northeast, and a cold front will approach the state late Friday night. The models continue to slow the front down, and it now looks most of the day Friday will be warm and dry with a mix of sun and clouds and a high back in the mid 80s. While a few showers are possible late Friday afternoon, it sure looks like the main window for scattered showers and thunderstorms will come from midnight Friday night through 12:00 noon Saturday.

The sky will clear Saturday afternoon as drier air returns, and the day will be cooler with a high between 70 and 74 degrees. Some communities up in the Tennessee Valley of far North Alabama won’t get out of the 60s.

SUNDAY: We begin the day with a low around 50 degrees, with 40s for the colder valleys. Then, with sunshine in full supply, we rise to near 80 degrees by afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: Looking generally dry Monday through Friday; a fresh supply of dry, cool air should arrive at mid-week Wednesday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama will host Arkansas at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday evening (6:00p CT kickoff)… the sky will be mostly fair, with temperatures falling from 68 degrees at kickoff into the low 60s by the final whistle. Some will want a light jacket or sweater walking from the stadium back to your car after the game.

NATIONAL SHRIMP FESTIVAL: The weather looks very nice in Gulf Shores for the annual event this weekend; mostly sunny days, fair nights, highs around 80 degrees. The chance of a shower is so small we won’t mention it in the forecast. See the complete Gulf Coast 7 Day Planner here. The Gulf Coast Beach Forecast is presented by Gulf Shores Plantation by Mandoki Hospitality Vacation Rentals. Escape to Gulf Shores Plantation where memories last a lifetime.

TROPICS: Joaquin has become post-tropical in the North Atlantic as it moves eastward; the rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
