Warm Afternoons; Showers Late In The Week
WARM OCTOBER DAYS: Our weather won’t change much today and tomorrow as an upper ridge builds across the Deep South; we project a partly to mostly sunny sky both days wit a high up in the mid 80s, well above the average high of 78. Won’t be close to record levels, however… today’s record high (October 6) is 93, set in 1925. The risk of a shower is so small we won’t mention it in the forecast.
FRIDAY/SATURDAY: An upper low currently over Arizona will lift out, and a cold front will drag into Alabama as the weekend begins. The 00Z runs of the GFS (American global model) and the ECMWF (European global model) are slower, and both hint that showers could linger into Saturday morning. We will bring in the chance of a shower Friday afternoon, with a better chance of scattered showers, and possibly a thunderstorm, Friday night and Saturday morning.
The rain should be out of here by late morning Saturday, and cooler air will follow the showers with a high only around 70 degrees Saturday afternoon. The sky will clear Saturday afternoon as dry air takes over.
SUNDAY AND NEXT WEEK: Sunday morning will be cool; most places will enjoy a low down in the low 50s, with 40s for the colder pockets across North and Central Alabama. Then, during the day Sunday, the sky will be sunny and we warm to near 80 degrees.
Most of next week looks dry and pleasant with highs around 80, and lows in the 50s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama will host Arkansas at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday evening (6:00p CT kickoff)… the sky will be mostly fair, with temperatures falling from 68 degrees at kickoff into the low 60s by the final whistle. Some will want a light jacket or sweater walking from the stadium back to your car after the game.
NATIONAL SHRIMP FESTIVAL: The weather looks very nice in Gulf Shores for the annual event this weekend; mostly sunny days, fair nights, highs around 80 degrees. The chance of a shower is so small we won’t mention it in the forecast.
TROPICS: Hurricane Joaquin is hanging in there with sustained winds of 75 mph; it is moving east across the North Atlantic, and will become extra-tropical later in the week. It could threaten Portugal/Spain early next week with wind and rain.
The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
