Mix Of Sun And Storms

RADAR CHECK: Most of the really active weather has shifted down into far South Alabama and the Florida Panhandle this afternoon; the morning storms have stabilized the atmosphere over the northern half of the state, and the weather around here is pretty quiet with only a few isolated showers at mid-afternoon over the Tennessee Valley.

We will maintain the risk of a few scattered showers tonight, but no heavy storms are expected since the morning round of storms really worked over the atmosphere. We note there was a pretty good bit of tree and power line damage in parts of the southern Birmingham metro this morning between 7:00 and 8:00… the damage below is from Homewood.

REST OF THE WEEK: A moist, unstable airmass will cover Alabama through Friday, meaning each day will have the chance of a few passing showers or thunderstorms. While the best chance of storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, we can’t rule out a late night or morning storm, like today. One the positive side, there will be some very nice intervals of sunshine and breaks in the rain along the way. Afternoon highs will remain mostly in the mid to upper 80s, not bad at all for early July in Alabama.

FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND: No real change. Mixed sun and clouds Saturday and Sunday, with the risk of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. It is simply impossible to give start/stop times of the rain for any specific location, just be ready for a passing storm from time to time. Highs will be in the 87 to 90 degree range.

NEXT WEEK: Heights begin to rise, meaning showers and storms should be a little fewer in number, and heat levels a little higher next week. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores through the holiday weekend, with the usual risk of a passing storm from time to time. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the mid to upper 80s, with low 90s inland. Sea water temperatures are generally in the mid 80s.
