Sun And Scattered Storms

| June 10, 2015 @ 6:24 am

CALM AT DAYBREAK: Nothing on radar around here early this morning; temperatures are mostly in the mid to upper 60s with some patchy dense fog.

A surface boundary is just north of Birmingham this morning; a few storms formed on that late yesterday, including a strong one that passed through the Birmingham metro. The front will wash out today, and most of the state will be in a warm, humid, tropical airmass, and with the heat of the day we will see “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms” developing after 2:00. The chance storms developing is high, but due to their scattered nature, the chance of of any one spot seeing a shower or storm today is around 25 percent. Temperatures should peak in the upper 80s today.

See my essay on “Understanding Summer Weather Forecasting in Alabama” which might help you with the usual summer pattern here if you are new to the area.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: No real change; we expect a mix of sun and clouds both days, with the risk of scattered showers and storms. Afternoon highs will be in the 87 to 90 degree range for most places.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: An upper air ridge will begin to build across the Southeast U.S… meaning a gradual trend toward hotter afternoons, with showers and storms becoming fewer in number. Expect a high at, or just over 90 degrees Saturday and Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: The upper high should bring highs in the low to mid 90s for at least the first half of the week with cooling showers remaining very isolated. Some evidence the ridge weakens toward the end of the week with a better chance of scattered storms; see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: All remains quiet across the Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected this week.

AT THE BEACH: We project about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine daily for the coast from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores through the weekend, with the usual risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the mid 80s, and closer to 90 degrees inland.
