Icy Travel North and East of Birmingham

| February 20, 2015 @ 3:15 pm

Significant icing issues have developed north and east of Birmingham. I-65 northbound is shut down near Morris due to an overturned tanker containing formaldehyde.

I am totally sure this is related to ice, but it most likely is. Old Springville Road between Chalkville and Springville is very icy, and parts of the road have been shut down due to wrecks. Many cars are in a ditch.

Multiple wrecks have been reported on I-59 across Northeast Jefferson County. If you are traveling north or northeast of Birmingham, be aware of very ice roads.

This is I-59 at Argo

I have heard of no major issues along I-20 anywhere in Alabama. Most big problems will be north of I-20, with the possible exception of I-20 through Calhoun and Cleburne counties early tonight.

The good news is that warmer air is moving northeast… Tuscaloosa and the Shelby County Airport are above freezing.

The warm-up will continue through the night, and by midnight the greatest risk of icy roads and ice accumulation will be over Northeast Alabama… from Gadsden north.

More later…
