CHECKING THE RADAR: As expected, not much action on radar this afternoon… just a few isolated showers over Lee and Chambers Counties. The sky is partly sunny, and temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. Most communities will be dry overnight.

TO THE NORTH: Severe storms are possible down into Tennessee tonight ahead of a surface boundary/upper trough. SPC maintains the standard “slight risk” of severe weather just north of our state…

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: Look for an increase in the number of showers and storms both days with the front stalling out just north of the state. It won’t rain the entire time, and the sun will be out at times. But, where storms do during during the afternoon and evening hours, they could pack a punch with potential for some hail and strong gusty winds. SPC has a “slight risk” defined for parts of Northwest Alabama both days. Afternoon highs should be in the upper 80s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The front washes out before any dry air can arrive, and it looks like we can safety forecast standard summer weather Saturday and Sunday. Partly sunny days with the risk of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. The chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in three both days, and highs will remain in the upper 80s to near 90.

Not much change early next week. A persistence forecast, which is what you expect in summer.

AT THE BEACH: Looks great from Panama City over to Gulf Shores through the weekend with mostly sunny days and fair nights; only a small risk of a shower each day. Highs on the coast in the 80s, with sea water temperatures in the upper 70s at most beaches.

TROPICS: NHC is monitoring a disturbance in the Bay of Campeche… only a 20 percent chance of development over the next 48 hours. Wind shear and cooler sea surface temperatures should keep this from becoming a significant system. The GFS hints some broad development in the region in about 5 days with potential for heavy rain for South Florida, but that scenario is not certain.
