HOT AFTERNOONS: Tuscaloosa and Montgomery reported a high of 90 degrees yesterday… but Birmingham reached 88, so still no 90 degree heat this year for the Magic City. But, a good chance that will change this afternoon as we will continue to forecast high at 90 degrees. Birmingham’s last ninety degree high came on September 12, 2013. The sky will be mostly sunny again today as high pressure aloft covers the state.
THE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Afternoon highs will stay close to 90 degrees tomorrow through Monday, with lows in the 60s. A weak surface front over far North Alabama will bring a little low level convergence, and we will mention the risk of widely scattered showers and thunderstorms tomorrow and Sunday. By “widely scattered”, that means most places won’t get wet, but where storms do form, they could be strong. SPC has low end 5 percent severe weather probabilities over North-Central Alabama both days due to the potential for gusty winds and some small hail with the stronger storms.
Tomorrow, the chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in five, and most of the storms will form during the afternoon and evening hours.
Sunday, the high resolution NAM model suggests a band of showers and storms will actually form during the morning hours…
Not really sure this happens, but we can’t discount the potential since this model has performed well in recent weeks.
Warmer air aloft Monday suggests any showers will be few and far between.
Bottom line is that the weekend will feature hot afternoons, and we can’t rule out a shower or storm in spots.
NEXT WEEK: Not much change; basically routine early summer weather Tuesday and Wednesday with a few widely scattered storms and a high around 90. Showers and storms could be a little more numerous by Thursday and Friday, with highs dropping back into the mid 80s. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
GULF COAST WEATHER: Sunny days, fair nights, and hardly any showers for the Central Gulf Coast (Panama City west to Gulf Shores) through Tuesday. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the low 80s, and closer to 90 inland. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this morning is 80 degrees.
