Too Cool For May

| May 15, 2014 @ 3:00 pm

**No afternoon Weather Xtreme video today; I am live at an event to benefit United Cerebral Palsy of Birmingham at the Highland Park Golf Course this evening**

MAY, OR JANUARY? Some Northeast Alabama communities are still in the 50s at mid-afternoon….

Temperatures (1)

We have a mix of sun and clouds, and no rain on radar.

Tonight will be very cool; we project a low in the mid 40s for many places early tomorrow morning, not far from the record low (for Birmingham) of 43, set in 1973.

TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Tricky forecast thanks to a deep, cold core upper trough that will be parked over the eastern third of the nation. Despite low dewpoints, the cold air aloft will make the air relatively unstable, and we will have to mention some risk of scattered showers, and maybe even a thunderstorm. I believe most places across North/Central Alabama will be rain-free tomorrow afternoon.

For Saturday, high resolution model data hints a wave rotating through the base of the upper trough could bring showers during the morning hours. Seems like the main window for showers will come Saturday morning between 4:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., and mainly along and north of I-20 (Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston north). The southern half of Alabama will be dry.

Then, on Sunday, seems like the best chance of showers will come during the afternoon hours. Maybe a little thunder, and due to the very cold air aloft, some of the showers might even produce a little small hail or graupel.

Rain amounts over the weekend should be generally light and spotty, and the sun should break out at times. Highs will be mostly in the mid 70s.

NEXT WEEK: A building upper high will bring warmer weather back to Alabama as we rise back into the 80s. The week looks rain-free with sunny days and fair nights.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Perfect weather for the Hangout Music Festival at Gulf Shores tomorrow through Sunday with sunny days and clear nights. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the 77-80 degree range. Next week will be dry from Panama City over to Gulf Shores with highs rising into the low 80s on the coast.
