A Windy Day

| March 25, 2014 @ 11:18 am

We are feeling the affects of the pressure gradient between an area of high pressure moving in from the north, and a rapidly intensifying area of low pressure off the Southeast Coast. The isobars lines over the state are close together and when this occurs, it causes windy conditions. This is the reason it is a blustery day across Alabama.

As the low strengthens today, the pressure gradient will continue to increase and will allow our winds to increase for this afternoon. The low will be lifting towards the northeast rapidly and by later this evening, the pressure gradient over the state will lessen, which will allow our winds to subside.

A strong north wind is ongoing across the state, and this wind is bringing in a colder and drier air mass that will allow our temps to drop into the 20s for much of Alabama tonight.

Because of the windy conditions, the National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Wind Advisory for every county in their coverage area until this evening. This includes the cities of  Hamilton, Jasper, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Gadsden Anniston, Montgomery, Auburn, Troy, Selma, Demopolis, and Clanton.
