Too Cold For March

WHAT A TWENTY FOUR HOUR CHANGE: Yesterday at 2:00p CT… Birmingham reported a toasty 74 degrees with a sunny sky. Today at 2:00p CT… it is only 33 degrees with a gray winter sky and a biting north wind. Clouds cover almost all of the state except for the Gulf Coast, but there is nothing on radar.
TONIGHT/TOMORROW: Temperatures will drop a bit, and most places will be in the mid to upper 20s early tomorrow morning. Not sure these clouds are going anywhere, but some partial clearing is possible in a few spots.
Tomorrow will remain mostly cloudy; the weather won’t be as cold as the high should be in the 46-50 degree range. Another wave will impact Alabama by afternoon with rain moving in from the southwest. The 12Z model runs are a little more aggressive with moving that rain up into Central Alabama, and I think we will need to mention at least a chance of some light rain as far north as I-20 (Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Anniston).
The high resolution NAM model brings the rain in tomorrow afternoon, while the GFS is slower, suggesting it will tomorrow night. We will go ahead and mention the risk of some light rain from Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston, and points south from about 3:00 p.m. tomorrow through 3:00 a.m. Wednesday. The most widespread rain should come over the southern half of the state. Thermal values show just rain… with no winter weather mischief.
WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY: The lead wave moves east of the state early Wednesday morning, and the daytime hours look pretty nice Wednesday with a partly sunny sky and a high around 60 degrees. But, clouds thicken quickly Wednesday night, and another wave will bring a chance of rain back to the state after midnight Wednesday night into the daytime hours Thursday.
While the upper system is pretty vigorous, the moisture looks a bit limited, and rain amounts Thursday should be mostly under 1/2 inch. The high Thursday will be in the low 50s with clouds all day and occasional rain. The rain moves out Thursday evening.
FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Friday and Saturday look very nice at this point. Ample sunshine both days with a high in the low 60s Friday, followed by upper 60s Saturday. Then, we will continue to mention some risk of showers Sunday, although the 12Z runs are not very bullish on rain. Low confidence in the Sunday forecast due to model inconsistency.
THE LAND OF VOODOO: The encouraging thing is that we still see no signs of any severe weather or winter weather problems through mid-March… take some time to watch the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
