Bad Situation
A very bad situation is in progress across the Birmingham Metro area and much of Central Alabama, reminiscent of the 1982 Winter Storm.
Tens of thousands of people are trying to make it home at this hour and roads are gridlocked.
Traffic is at a standstill all over the area. In the Tuscaloosa area as well as across the Birmingham Metro area.
Wrecks not being worked by most local jurisdictions unless there are injuries.
If you are stuck on the road, it’s best not to abandon your vehicle. Take it slow and easy, think about what large hills are along your route and try to avoid them.
Warming stations will be set up for stranded motorists this afternoon and tonight.
A recent Tweet mentioned moving one mile in 90 minutes on Valleydale Road in Shelby County.
If you are in a warm, safe place, stay there until the traffic abates.
Cell phone networks are jammed, so be patient.
The snow is over in places like Hamilton, Fayette, Jasper, Double Springs and Cullman. Roads are slippery in these areas, but generally not as snowpacked.
Light snow continues in the I-59 corridor, including Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Gadsden.
Heavier snow is falling from Hale through Bibb, Perry, Chilton, Shelby, Coosa, Talladega, Clay, Calhoun, Cleburne and Randolph Counties.
A wintry mix is falling south of this area from Marengo through Dallas, Autauga and Elmore Counties. The preicpitation has changed to snow at Selma in Dallas County.
