Update On Weekend Storms

| December 20, 2013 @ 12:35 pm

Not much change in the overall thinking on the weekend weather situation.

Below is the updated severe weather outlook from the Storm Prediction Center, valid from 6 a.m. CT tomorrow through 6:00 a.m. CT Sunday…

The highest severe weather probabilities remain west of Alabama, where a “moderate risk” is up for parts of MS/LA/TX/TN/AR. In this zone, thunderstorms could produce damaging winds and a few tornadoes, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

The standard “slight risk” is up for that part of Alabama west of a line from Gadsden to Montgomery to Orange Beach.

Here is model output from the high resolution NAM model, valid at 3:00 a.m. Sunday. At that point the storms should be moving into the Birmingham metro.

TIMING: The storms will enter West Alabama between 9:00 and 11:00 p.m. tomorrow night, moving steadily to the southeast. The storms should be pretty much over by 6:00-8:00 a.m. Sunday.

In Alabama, the storms should be mostly linear, and the main threat will come from strong wind gusts. These winds could be high enough to knock down trees and power lines in spots, and a number of severe thunderstorm warnings will be needed.

Also, shear values suggest a few isolated, short lived tornadoes could form within the line. See the morning discussion below for the long story, and stay tuned for updates.
